This feels like one of the scariest posts I have ever written, but it’s been a long time coming and the timing seems right. So I am just going to say it – after a lot of consideration Justin and I have decided that the Printing & Production side of Molly and Tom is coming to a natural close at the end of September 2022.

I want to say this right at the top before there is any confusion! Molly and Tom is not closing down, we are only stopping the production & printing side. We are moving into a new phase / cycle of our business journey!

For the last two years, Justin and I have been trying to figure out how to make our business work in a way that feels right to us! This has not been an easy task and has brought so much to the surface for us.

We have been in the business of making things for over 10 years now, and while we have enjoyed it, we have reached a point where we feel like this part of our life and career has come to a natural end. This has been such a hard decision to make because we have always loved what we do, especially for the people we make things for. But it has started to come at a cost to us (as well as the cost to our planet), and so we feel it’s time to explore other options and creative expressions.

I won’t get into all  the details now, but in all honesty running a handmade business is hard! And something that a lot of people don’t really talk about. The amount of labour and love that goes into making a product by hand is something that is often not fully charged for and comes at a huge cost to the maker. I don’t say this to make people feel bad, we have lovingly done this work for many years, and it has brought us soooooo much joy, but the honest truth is we are tired. And I think both Justin and I want to explore other options.

We also can’t ignore the crisis we (as a whole) are facing from over consumption. And while I have always felt that our products were made with the intention of being kept for many generations to come, I can’t ignore the amount of physical waste our one little studio is making. We have always tried to find a way to do things in alignment with our values but I think there are other ways we can use our skills. Ways that leave less of a footprint on this planet and therefore we want to explore those opportunities and see where they take us!

As a side note: I don’t think that the products we have made have been wasteful or unnecessary. I think it is so important for people to see what truly matters and what brings them joy (which is people, love and family) through printed memories. I just don’t want to market these things in a way that leads people to believe that they have to have it or they need more and more just for me to be able to make a living.

I really want to dive deeper into this decision and why we have made this choice but one email isn’t long enough and there have been so many factors that have influenced this decision.

So what does this mean for Molly and Tom? Well for starters, we want to openly wind down this part of our business over the next six months. We will continue to take orders up until the end of September, which will give us the last two months to sell off our machinery and use up as much of the materials we have on hand. Justin has already started training for a new career, and will be seeking full time employment at the start of 2023. This is something we realised was very important to us after COVID as our family income has always been tied up together and we feel it’s time for us to create two separate sources of income. In all honesty the financial stability of one of us having a job feels very comforting and something that we have never really experienced in our careers or marriage.

And as for me? Well I will still be here! Just with another version of M&T!

I still wholeheartedly believe in this work! When I look back at my career, whether it has been through wedding stationery & styling, packaging and now through the signature brand experience the essence is still the same. I want to help people connect, to tell their story and create experiences that build relationships!

We really want to close this chapter in our business with the same integrity & spirit in which we started. Which was to be in service to our clients. I know this will impact your business as well, and we want to make this transition as easy as it can be for you. It has been an absolute honour to work with each and every one of you! Your support has meant so much to us, and every item we have made for you has been made with such love and gratitude. This is why we want to be so open and honest about us closing down this side of our business. It has not been an easy decision to make, but keeping it open doesn’t feel right either and so we have to close this chapter in a way that feels in honour to us and our clients.

As I mentioned you will still be able to order up until the end of September which should give you enough time to order some of your favourite products and to find a new supplier. I am here if you have any questions, so please just send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I really see this decision as both an end and a beginning – yes it’s the end of us as makers (something that has been part of our identity for so long) BUT it’s also the start of us experiencing and creating new things. I am beyond excited to give my full attention to helping people create a signature brand experience. I believe it has the power to create a business that can feel joyful & purposeful for the business owner, as well as their clients. I am excited about the freedom and flexibility it will give us, and how I can follow my passion and interest around creating businesses that are sustainable to people and the planet.

I hope you will stick around for this new chapter of M&T, but equally if you feel that our time together has come to an end, I completely understand. Thank you for all your support!

With Love, Stacey & Justin x
